There will never be a free market.

The realistic point is that capitalism as you want it, will never exist.
The 'free market' will never exist

Certain People will always have the means to use force to subjugate others
Certain People will always want to use force to subjugate others
Power, control, and Profit will always come before humanity.

This has been proven all throughout history and to the present.

It is true that America has never had a free market because private enterprise would never allow it.
Private enterprise took the minimal government we had and changed it into the USA. They increased the power of government in order to increase the force they could exact over workers and citizens.

If you think those who have power over the government are just going to lose all power because you get rid of the government, you are mistaken.

There will never be any such thing as a minimalist government because that does not serve the people who are in power.
IF you tear down the means for people to control others, they will create other means.

Again, look at the USA. Economic powers controlled America through the British government. They kept power even after British lost it's hold on America.
They turned the articles of confederation into the constitution. And they are the reason we are where we are now.

Realize that any freedom you want, you will have to fight for it daily.

wage math

So people are balking at minimum wage increases
Stating that people are asking to be paid more than they are worth

Let's look at worth on the other side

What is a no-skill worker worth compared to the owner of a company (assuming they are the highest paid person)?

Let's look at it in raw hours
Say a part time employee works 20 hours a week
A motivated owner works 140 hours a week
That means that motivated owner is putting 7 times more effort in.
Let's double it for skill
14 times more

Hell, let's triple it,
I can deal with an owner making 21 times more than the people who actually produce and sell the product.
I can even deal with 70 times more

But that's not reality is it?
McDonalds decided that their CEO's 'Fair Share' was 1,196 time what their workers make. Without ever flipping a burger, or taking an order, or cleaning a floor, or fixing a fry machine

Do you want to talk about stock? Well, new CEOs usually don't buy stock with their own money. The company gives it to them. So the stock is a part of their earnings.
It's not anything they sacrificed for.
They didn't risk any of their own money.

And I wonder what would happen if a CEO would actually give their workers more of the fruits of their labor?
Oh, the CEO would quit. Well, good ridden. There are others that can take their place.
And if no one takes their place?
Fine. I don't eat McDonalds anyway. The companies that do shaft their workers don't make anything that betters anyone.


Or you want to talk about raising prices?
So you want me to back off because someone making 1000 times more than their workers would rather screw customers than make maybe 500 times more than their workers instead?
You'd rather get mad at me for wanting better wages for workers. Or wanting more people employed at better wages.

But you ignore or even praise the person who could actually make a difference yet chooses not to for their own gain.
You make excuses for the people who can give better wages and jobs so people don't need government assistance.

you want to talk about small business?
Small business isn't the problem
Small business pay their people much better in terms of what they make compared to their workers.
Small business doesn't pull in the capital or profits that these big companies do.
These companies are the reason small business has it so hard. Yet you want to blame it on workers who actually want to be able to live off of what they earn.

You can scoff at people for judging the person who makes 500 to 1000 times more than the people actually producing the product and selling it. But when someone tries to fight for the people who actually make the profits, you say they are not worth it.

People are arguing about a person asking for a higher minimum wage when owners are the ones increasing their wages at the expense of the workers.
The other argument is that the higher minimum wages would increase prices
Like this is an automatic force of the economy and not a consequence of greed
When a company makes a billion in profit (And still complains that the market is 'challenging'), and thinks they have to raise prices in order to raise their worker wages,
fuck them.


You ask people to justify a minimum wage increase
Justify a person making 200 to 300 times more than their workers

The issue is, if someone is given something, should everyone else be given the same thing.

The Hebrew Spiritual Anthology

The Bible is a beautiful peace of artwork. An anthology written thousands of years ago in languages that have evolved along with the culture of those who wrote it. It tells the collective story of a people. Their struggles, their migration, their victories, defeats, and, apparently more importantly, their relationship with this thing they called יהוה
(the name may have been lost in translation)

A body of rulers (the church) amassed the writings of these ancient people and compiled stories that they thought showed a consistent picture of a thing they called 'God'. This thing called 'God' is used to help them rule to this day.

Like any other form of artwork, people tend to interpret it based on their own experiences, emotions, and needs. Sometimes the artist fails to construe the true meaning of their artwork because they can't overcome simple human perceptions.

I agree that it's the people who teach it, interpret it, read it, perceive it rather than the writing itself. It seems that people lose sight of basic reading comprehension skills when they read sacred texts. The skeptics and the apologetics
It's why I'm all for the Bible (at least certain portions of it) and other religious texts being taught in public schools. Put on the reading list right along with Crime and Punishment or the Illiad. Make students do a book report discussing the same concepts you would for the tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Oddly enough, before I went to Kuwait, I had a cultural brief where the man told us that you just can't pick up the Quran and read it. Reading and understanding the Quran takes many years of learning. And don't even try to read it in english; that's just a waste of time.

I've always thought the biggest problem with religious texts is that people throw reading comprehension out of the window.

What is the bible, really?
Who wrote it? Was it written by one person or by multiple people?
Was it written all at once or over a long period of time?
Were the events written as they happened or did a significant amount of time pass before the events were recorded?
Was the bible written as one book or was it a bunch of smaller documents compiled well after they were written?
who compiled these documents? Why did they?
Are there more documents? Why were they left out?

WHat language was it written in? how many times has it been translated? Has it been translated from it's original language directly to english or was in translated into other languages before it got to it's present english form(won't mention how the english language has changed)? Is every english version translated the same?

Who said it was inspired by God? What does inspired mean?
Who said that God wrote the bible? is there really any passage in the bible that makes that claim?
Every other book (fiction and non-fiction) is read with consideration for the person who wrote it and the time/culture they wrote it in? Why isn't this considered when reading the bible?

If you read a book about thomas jefferson and found it inspirational to your life, are you obligated to follow all of Jefferson's teachings and do everything just like jefferson did?

Intellectual Property should not be allowed to be transferred.
Once a person relinquishes their rights to their intellectual property, that property should be free for public use.

The USA and Personal Liberty


Right after the Constitution was Ratified,
The federal government conscripted all Free Able-bodied White Males between 18 and 45
After the Constitution was Ratified, The federal government would not decide on voting rights of women, so the states created legislation to deny women the right to vote.
A woman's property was under the control of her father or husband.
Husbands were allowed to Assault their wives.

And last but not least, People were allowed to OWN other people.
The Original Constitution even stated:
*No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, But shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.*
The Constitution allowed Business owners to use the Force of the State to deny people Basic Life, Liberty, and Property.

So, If you really want an historical example of a free market, the US never qualified

From student to worker

I agree that financial institutions are making money off of college students. I agree that the cost of higher education in America is stupid.
Ever since the government reduced subsidies to colleges, prices have skyrocketed.

People rarely talk to children about credit and it's affect on their lives. Which is why they're ripe when they move away from home and have to make financial decisions by themselves.
People rarely promote community college has a cheaper and valid alternative to a four year expensive school.

Now I'm going to be that guy. When I was deciding to go to college, the one thing that scared me more than anything was student loans. For whatever reason, I thought that this was the worse idea. I ended up joining the Navy. I know a lot of people won't respect that decision, and I really don't care. But, I got an education and money to further my education.

Higher education is a big deal. It's still a good investment if you do it right. Much better to have a viable degree than just a high school diploma.
A big problem in today's job market is that people aren't qualified for the jobs that are out there.
I like the idea of businesses working with colleges to help students get the education they need.

The best advice I could give is this,
Start volunteering early during K-12. Get a summer job as soon as you can. Start earning your own money and learn about managing that money.
I'd encourage kids to apply for every grant and scholarship they can, even if they don't think they qualify.
Go to a cheap community college or take cheap online courses and get the core classes and drunken sex out of the way.

Take a little time to look at the job market and see what interests them first. Volunteer in industries that catch their eye.
Once they find something that pulls them, go to the HR department of a couple of businesses and find out what education background they're looking for. Find out what education benefits they give their employees.
Tailor your education to the career you wish to pursue.
Check in at least every quarter to keep up with changes in the industry.
Seek out companies that provide tuition assistance or pay for certificates and licenses.

If you can't figure out what you want to do, postpone college.
Learn a trade, get a license or certificate in a field that interests you.

Realize that you will have to start from the bottom and work your way up.
You will not be making the money you want to make when you first enter the workforce.
Time and Hard work is the key to increased pay. The only way around that is knowing the right people.
Remember to network when you volunteer/intern or work part time jobs.

As for those who already have student debt. sucks.
I can't get down with loan forgiveness or defaulting on loans.
I would like to see Work-Study programs completely replace loan programs.
If we had to keep some loan programs, I'd like to see a zero interest rate for government loans.
I'd like to see a Tuition reimbursement for community service program for people who already have student debt.
Tuition would be reimbursed for every year of community service

Why government is involved in marriage

Marriage is and has always been about property rights. 

I do think that Marriage is a business deal above all else. It is a transfer/merger of property. And women were considered property. If they weren't considered property themselves, they were surely the human conduit by which the property was exchanged/consolidated.
A woman's property was controlled by her father or her husband.

Now most of us are not forced into a merger by our family, we create the merger based on our own criteria

Property law gives immediate family members rights to your property and the ability to make decisions for you without a will or power of attorney
A marriage adds a person to your immediate family. It gives that person more rights over your property than your other family members

A marriage license is used in lieu of a will or a power of attorney.

Composition of a Family. 
 Something different all together. Family is what we should be meditating on. Again, what it can look like, what it means, how we (the community) will support it
I think marriages fail because they shouldn't have been united in the first place.

I love the idea of the person performing the marriage requesting a couple get marriage counseling before they get marriage
The counselor can facilitate a discussion about marriage. Why they are getting married.

I think people are too caught up in 'right or wrong' that they miss the actual meaning behind it. I tend not to think in those terms. I think in terms of healthy/unhealthy, suffering/well-being. Thinking about an action and it's real consequences. And knowing the receipt of those consequences depend on the individual.

Ask yourself if you are willing to consider this person a family member bonded like your blood relatives.

Mandatory National Service

I have an issue with making it mandatory for all Americans
I do think it should be tied to government assistance.
Any American who wants any type of government assistance should serve their country/community in exchange for assistance
It could be extended to immigrants too. I hear people complain about undocumented workers getting government assistance. In this case, what difference does it make if they are working for that assistance?

Speaking of military service. We could get back to the original meaning of 'militia' and provide another solution to the gun issue. The founders wanted all citizens (well, all free white males of a certain age) to be able to defend themselves and this country. That meant everyone would be armed and everyone would be conscripted to their state's militia (what later evolved into the national guard). The states would be responsible for regular (at least once a month) training of the citizens.
Currently, military weapons training is reserved for certain jobs; but it could be expanded to all.
This way, all citizens would be properly trained in when and how to use weapons.
And all citizens would be responsible for defending their own freedom and not relying on someone else to do it for them.

Of course, a person who is physically or mentally unable to participate wouldn't be required to.

I think we (the community, not the government) should pressure companies to pay their full time employees a living wage.
There is no good reason for a person working a full time job to still need assistance.

Though, It happens because we let it happen. We aren't united/fighting for one another like we should be

Or we need to unite and create more worker owned and operated businesses where workers have control of their wages

If I were in control of govt. assistance programs, I would go after the company that the person worked for. Either force them to pay their worker more, Or tax the crap out of the company, effectively making the company pay for the govt. assistance

Welfare woes

All this legislation about drug testing in government assistance programs is wasteful.
and arguments about who receives the most welfare are ridiculous

The moral of the story is that none of the politicians (or their base) are interested in helping ALL Americans find work that is adequate enough to provide lifetime housing, food, education, transportation, childcare, and healthcare.

Abortion legislation

...is a waste of time.
What's the difference between a legal abortion and an illegal abortion? A woman with greater health risks and some jail time. According to the NYTimes , legal or illegal doesn't stop women from getting abortions.

When does life begin? Does it really matter? We kill various forms of life without regard to when it's life began.
When does a human have rights? A question along the right track; but, one that no one can agree on. Continuous argument gets us nowhere.

The solution is to reduce unintended pregnancies. Actually, the solution is to reduce unprotected sex.

Of course abstinence is the best method; but is it the most reasonable method?

Let's try something revolutionary... proper education.
Let's set our prepubescent children down with the GYN. Let's use professionals to explain sexual health to our children. Leave no stone unturned.
Let's teach our children what sex is and why the human animal wants to have sex. Show them that sperm and eggs really don't care if you can afford a child or if it's just a one night stand.
Let's teach them about the many infections caused by irresponsible choices. Teach them about the millions who have died each year.

Let's teach them how to use contraception effectively and consistently.

Let's make birth control easily available and affordable

Let's set good examples for our children; showing them what a healthy relationship looks like.


I don't think life really has anything to do with it
There is a big difference between life (what is considered a living entity) and personhood (what has rights that should be protected)

Scientifically, sperm, eggs, growing broccoli, deer, and various other things are alive. None of those have protected rights.
The real issue is over a legal term (personhood) that can change with the circumstances

There are people who want to give all animals personhood status
Some Animals are protected when their species is endangered and we deem their life important enough to protect. And when their numbers grow, we lift those protections.

We've always decided what life is sacrosanct and what is not.

Life is not defined by survivability in a certain condition. Just because an embryo cannot survive in a different environment does not negate its life. The question is whether a fertilized egg is somehow more important than a living sperm or egg.

Whatever criteria we use to define personhood will always be arbitrary to me.

An odd analogy is the idea that you have the right to use deadly force against Someone who is taking or destroying your property.
We've already decided that property is more important than life

It may seem like an asshole thing to mention, but most abortions are about a woman not being able to care for a child. It's usually a money (property) issue.

I'm pro choice only because I think legislation against abortion is futile. I think it is a decision that should be made by the mother with no pressure from outside sources.
That being said, I don't want anyone to have an abortion

Every life is a Lesson

More powerful than sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher.
or reading a text book

Listen to the story of a stranger, a friend, an enemy.

Know that your experiences, and those of the people around you, only amount to a grade school education. Anecdotes do not make an expert. There is always more. There are more stories, more lessons to be learned.

Know that statistics only tell a partial story, a poor, clouded story.

Know that the daily news has an agenda


One needs to learn another's needs, dreams, goals, struggles, suffering, joy.
This knowledge is needed for compassion.

Wisdom is fed by paying attention to life. Paying attention to the stories of others.
Compassion asks what are you going through and what can I do to help.

Listen always.


I encourage everyone to tell their stories. Know and Share their histories.
I almost think everyone has an obligation
Not for the purposes of competition or blame. Not to participate in Oppression olympics.

People should tell their stories to promote unity
To show others that they are not alone. To create kinship
To realize that we are more alike than we are different
To realize that other people share your suffering and your joy.

Always find ways to facilitate others in their story telling (education)

I'm weary of people who tell other people's stories.



This is why I love NPR. I haven't known a media outlet that allowed so many people from so many different backgrounds to tell their own story. If anyone knows of anything that compares, please let me know.

Property Rights and Personhood

A person who believes that it is OK to use deadly force against a person who is stealing or damaging their property...
who is against abortion...
Hypocrite?

I don't think life really has anything to do with it
There is a big difference between life (what is considered a living entity) and personhood (what has rights that should be protected)

Scientifically, sperm, eggs, growing broccoli, deer, and various other things are alive. None of those have protected rights.
The real issue is over a legal term (personhood) that can change with the circumstances

There are people who want to give all animals personhood status
Some Animals are protected when their species is endangered and we deem their life important enough to protect. And when their numbers grow, we lift those protections.

We've always decided what life is sacrosanct and what is not.

Life is not defined by survivability in a certain condition. Just because an embryo cannot survive in a different environment does not negate its life. The question is whether a fertilized egg is somehow more important than a living sperm or egg.

Whatever criteria we use to define personhood will always be arbitrary to me.

An odd analogy is the idea that you have the right to use deadly force against Someone who is taking or destroying your property.
We've already decided that property is more important than life

It may seem like an asshole thing to mention, but most abortions are about a woman not being able to care for a child. It's usually a money (property) issue.

I'm pro choice only because I think legislation against abortion is futile. I think it is a decision that should be made by the mother with no pressure from outside sources.
That being said, I don't want anyone to have an abortion

Maximum return

If you are an investor, you expect to see a maximum return on your investment. That is accepted as capitalism
If you are a worker and expect maximum return on your investment, you are seen as a hinderance to capitalism



The middle and lower class put in human capital.
Companies would not be able to start, run, or grow without labor.
They also have 401Ks and other retirement funds that put capital into the growth of companies.

If I put in my time and talents to a company, I do want to see a good return on my investment.

A good return on an investment is an entirely different thing than our current need for maximum return on investment.
A maximum return that takes away from worker's wages, benefits, and pensions in order to increase profits and returns.
A maximum return that fires workers in America and outsources jobs or uses forced labor in other countries

I don't want a return on an investment at the cost of the livelihoods of the majority of Americans
